He graduated from Lutterworth Grammar School and Community College and enrolled at Birmingham City University to pursue a master’s degree in property management. In 2022, Irwin accused A Place in the Sun producers of replacing him as a host after 18 years because of his cancer diagnosis, which put him in a “really low mood”.
Irwin hosted episodes of the BBC’s property series Escape to the Country and To Buy or Not to Buy. Irwin also hosted the spin-off Escape to the Country: Escape to the Perfect Town.
